Amazing.... April 18, 2006 Bill Snyder very carefully outlines the steps to success in any endeavour in this book. Before Snyder took over Kansas State, they were actually considered WORSE than the WORST. The football program was actually BELOW rock-bottom. Snyder took steps to focus, organize and lead on a day by day basis. Snyder stresses that this did not happen over night, and that patience is very important to creating a positive end result. Each day is another small step. 18-19 hour days were common. Effectively dealing with people and time management are big items of discussion in this book. Building a team of unselfish and hard working people takes more work than many realize. Snyder is a genius.
Life Lessons from a Great Man January 5, 2004 This book furthers the idea that Coach Snyder is in the business of shaping individual for beyond the playing field. The life lessons that players in his program encounter will be of greater value than anything that money can buy. I encourage any coach or true sports fan to read this book. Just a skimming of the chapters is a better education than any leadership course that I've attended.
Excellent tool to demonstrate leadership in practice July 20, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I am a member of the first graduating class of Leadership Studies minors at Kansas State University. The process of the creation of this book from the conceptual stage to the final product is indicative of its value to the study of leadership. Drs. Scott and Shoop demonstrated collaboration and teamwork in order to create this book. The book puts forth excellent examples that aid in the understanding of current leadership philosophy. Besides the obvious educational benefit, any sports fan would appreciate the inside information from the man that has orchestrated the greatest turnaround in college football history. In today's society that is so sports-oriented, the result is a wonderful book on leadership that is interesting and will be enjoyed by many for years to come.
Fabulously Executed! April 10, 1999 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I was strongly moved while reading this book. This book has helped me realize the strong fundamentals that are adhered to at KSU can be spread to everyday business. With the support of everyone, anything can be done. I read the book because my son has recently transferred to K-State and will be a part of the "great things" at K-State in the direction of Coach Snyder. They may not have won a conference championship yet but good things will continue to happen to a program that is built on morals and values. Good luck to the Wildcats in 1999!
A five-star book bridging leadership theory and practice! February 25, 1999 This book bridges the theory and practice of leadership by focussing on the remarkable story of Coach Bill Snyder and the tranformation of the Wildcat Football Program, Kansas State University, and the community of Manhattan, Kansas. Drs. Scott and Shoop are to be commended for selecting a leader whose purpose is to give significance to others rather than seek it for himself. The authors are to be further applauded for taking perspectives and quotes from a group representative of those people Bill Snyder has impacted: players and their families, university employees and students, and citizens of Manhattan and the state of Kansas. The lessons are very practical; Bill Snyder's philosophy of continuous improvement can be freely adopted by anyone.
